World Yogasana Championship 2026: India To Host Inaugural Global Event In Ahmedabad
India is set to stage the first World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad, from June 4th–8th, 2026. The event is scheduled at TransStadia in Gujarat. Organisers said athletes from over 40 countries are expected. The championship is being held under World Yogasana. Yogasana Bharat is the host body for the global meet.
Preparations moved forward after India’s national selection trials ended in Sonepat, Haryana. The trials ran on May 1st and 2nd, 2026. They were held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre. Competitors performed across Traditional, Artistic, Rhythmic, and Athletic Yogasana categories. Selected athletes will now shift focus to a national camp.

The chosen Indian National Yogasana Team will train in Ahmedabad before the championship. The National Coaching Camp is set at the Naranpura Sports Complex (SAI NCOE). It runs from May 10th to June 2nd. Organisers see the camp as the final build-up phase. The plan is to prepare athletes for international scoring standards.
Speaking on the occasion President of Yogasana Bharat, Udit Sheth, said: "Hosting the first-ever World Yogasana Sports Championship is a defining moment for the sport. It is our vision as India, led by our Hon’ble PM, to take Yoga to the youth globally through the sport of Yogasana such that it resonates in many multi-sport events globally with a high possibility to make it an Olympic Sport. We’ve built a strong competitive ecosystem, and now Yogasana is ready for the global stage. India is proud to lead this movement. Yogasana is a gateway to the Yoga way of life."
Elated on hosting the inaugural edition of the World Yoga Championship, Secretary General of World Yogasana and Yogasana Bharat, Dr. Jaideep Arya, added: "The level of participation and talent witnessed during the national trials in Sonepat highlights the tremendous growth of Yogasana across India. The championship will provide athletes with an international platform while further accelerating the sport’s global recognition and development."
World Yogasana recognises and governs Yogasana at the global level. The sport combines yoga discipline with competitive performance. Routines are scored under standard rules. Judges assess precision, balance, flexibility, control, stability, and degree of difficulty. Officials, athletes, and federations are set to arrive in Ahmedabad for the June programme.
World Yogasana operates as the international body for Yogasana. It works on common rules and oversees international championships. It also supports wider participation across age groups. In India, Yogasana Bharat functions as the National Sports Federation for Yogasana. It is recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and is affiliated with the Indian Olympic Association and World Yogasana.
The World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad is set to run over five days in June 2026. India’s team selection process has already finished in Sonepat. The next step is the coaching camp in Ahmedabad, from May 10th to June 2nd. Organisers expect the event to bring together athletes and officials from more than 40 countries.
