Chennai, Dec 13: India went down fighting to Canada 1-2 on Tuesday and will now play Netherlands for 7-8 positions in the 21st ICL World men's team squash championship.

The high point of India's showing was Saurav Ghosal's stirring 12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9, win against Shahier Razik in the second singles that kept the hosts afloat. That was the only solace for the Indians as Siddharth Suchde went down to Shawn de Lierre in the first singles and then Ritwik Bhattacharya lost to Matthew Giuffre in the deciding tie. Meanwhile, Malaysia got past the Netherlands 3-0 and will take on Canada for 5-6 positions.

Incidentally, India had beaten the Dutch in 2005 in the 11-12 playoff match.

The results (5-8 positions):

Canada beat India 2-1 (Shawn de Lierre bt Siddharth Suchde 11-3, 13-11, 13-15, 11-8; Sahier Razik lost to Saurav Ghosal 10-12, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6, 9-11; Matthew Giuffre bt Ritwik Bhattacharya 11-8, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7).

Malaysia beat Netherlands 3-0 (Mohd Adnan bt Tom Hoevenaars 3-11, 12-10, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3; Mohd Iskandar bt Laurens Jan Anjema 11-9, 11-8, 11-3; Ong Beng Hee bt Dylan Bennett 11-6, 12-10).
