Deprived Indian athlete turns to prostitution

Raipur, Aug 4: After world champ, Renu Gora serving tea at the Nation Institute for Sports (NIS), it is now the story of a deprived athlete who was forced into prostitution.

26-year-old Nisha Shetty who has been arrested by the police under the charges of prostitution, reportedly told the police officer who was interrogating her that she was forced to turn into a call girl due to poverty.

Nisha Shetti who represented Assam at the National Games in 1998 was granted her bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 by a court in Raipur. But she does not have that much money so she stays in jail.

The national level athlete lost her husband to depression and alcoholism in 2007. Without having a source of income to feed herself and her child she was left with no option but what she chose.

These incidents draw attention to the sorry state of how sports persons who are not into cricket are treated in the country.
