Indian Grand Prix 5 Hi, Day 1: Indian domestic competition returns since the Inter-States in Bhubaneswar in June as some of the upcoming names of track and field will have another shot at Asian Games 2023 qualification as the Indian Grand Prix 5, beginning in Chandigarh on Sunday (September 10).
The focus is on the 100m runners mostly as the likes of Amlan Borgohain, Amiya Mallick and Jyothi Yarraji will push for impressive timing in men's and women's relay events.


Abhishek Pal wins the 5000m final to make another stronger claim for Asian Games 2023 selection. The long-distance runner is nervously awaiting confirmation of his selection as he is among the group of athletes, who were asked to reappear for trials at the IGP 5.

Jinson Johnson clocked his season best of 3:39.32 seconds with a month to go for the Asian Games 2023. The timing was about 4 seconds slower than his national record set four years ago

Kishore Kumar Jena wins Indian Grand Prix 5 with a result of 82.53m. His 35-year-old coach Samarjeet Singh Malhi finishes 18th with an attempt of 60.13m!

Shweta Thakur claims top spot with an attempt of 5.61m as Ancy Sojan skips the event.
Harmilan Bains decides to opt out of the women's 1500m race. The mid-distance runner tells MyKhel she opted out after seeing herself as lone participant in 1500m as she felt she wouldn't have achieved the desired timings without rivals and pacemakers in fray. She will compete in the women's 800m final tomorrow

Jyothi Yarraji clocks 53.91 seconds to finish sixth in the Race A of 400m. Positive show at the front as Vithya Ramaraj clocks 52.40 seconds to win the women's 400m final.

100m hurdles queen Jyothi Yarraji competes in the 400m for the first time and will be competing against some fast runners in Aishwarya Mishra, Himanshi Mallick, Nithya Ramaraj among others.

The 400 relay Asian record holder, Amoj Jacob, clocks a 45.92 seconds to win the men's 400m event! He was the sole runner to clock sub-46 timing. Complete result to follow soon

Meanwhile the fourth and final men's 400m race is about to start with all of Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv among others competing in the race

Experienced Odisha sprinter Srabani Nanda clocks the fastest at 11.77 seconds while Nithya Gandhe (11.85s) and Aishwarya Dhaneshwari (11.94s) were the second and third fastest respectively.

Harjit Singh sets the pace in the 100m races as he clocks 10.55 seconds ahead of Amlan and Amiya! Results to follow
We are not far away from final race of men's 100m as Amlan Borgohain and Amiya Mullick will be competing for the first time this season. Amiya holds the national record at 10.26 seconds while Amlan clocked 10.25 seconds last year but it wasn't verified by the AFI.

Unconvincing result from triple jump in absence of big names as Punjab's Sukhpreet Singh claims gold with an attempt of 14.85m. Followed y 13.94m by Swagat Behera in two-man final as Narpinder Singh and Jaskaran Singh didn't start

Big throw by the women's shot put national record holder as Abha Khatua throws 18.02m in the fourth round. That throw should help her chances for Asian Games qualification. She won Asian Championship silver medal in Bangkok this year and a prime medal contender for Asiad!
The first three rounds of 8-athlete women shot put final are over and distances are soon to be revealed. Meanwhile men's 100m heat are about to start at 4 PM. Five heats are to take place with Amlan Borgohain and Amiya in action in the last heat while Harmanpreet Singh is in action in Heat 4.

Jyothi Yarraji has already made it to the Asian Games 2023 in her forte individual 100m hurdles as the track and field sensation is on record-breaking spree and is a prime candidate to become India's first hurdler medal at the Asian Games. She is expected to be in action in the individual events in IGP 5 on Day 1 while relay events are scheduled on Day 2.
Apart from them, the 400m and men and women runners will be in focus as well with the Asian record quartet of Amoj Jacob, Rajesh Ramesh, Muhammed Ajmal, Muhammed Anas will also be competing in the individual events. Out of favour runners Arokia Rajiv, Normal Noah Tom, Alex Anthony among others will also be in action.
The much-followed men's javelin throw will also be in action with World Championship returnee Kishore Kumar Jena be in action after finishing fifth in Budapest.
