Indian men swimmers bag 9 gold in South Asian Championship
Lahore, Sep 7 (UNI) Following on the footsteps of their female counterparts, Indian men swimmers bagged nine gold on the fourth day of the inaugural South Asian Swimming and Water Polo Championship here.
Karan Singh started the proceedings for India yesterday, as he won the gold in the 200m freestyle with a timing of 2 minutes 12.41 seconds, while his compatriot Saurabh Ramdas had to satisfy himself with the silver medal. The bronze medal in this category went to Pakistan's Mazhar Naqvi.
In the 200m butterfly freestyle open category also, India won both the gold and silver with Aaron D'souza coming on top clocking 2 minutes 7.09 seconds and Aditya Sangverkar taking silver. Nasir Ali of Pakistan clinched the bronze medal.
Indian swimmers also came on top in the 50m butterfly age group and 1500m freestyle open category with Gopinath Kayal and Aaron D'souza bagging gold for them.
In the 200m breaststroke open category, Agnishwar Jayaprakash won the gold, while Fhamu Singh and Praveen Toksa came on top in the 50m breaststroke age group and 200m backstroke open category respectively.
India also dominated the proceedings in the team events as they came out victorious in both 4x200m relay open and 4x100m freestyle age group category.
With 9 golds, 6 silvers and 1 bronze India tops the medals tally, followed by Sri Lanka with 1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze, while hosts Pakistan occupies the third position with 1 silver and 5 bronze medals under their kitty.
