Indian Olympic Association's Funding Halted by IOC Over Internal Disputes

By MyKhel Staff

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) finds itself in turmoil as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended funding to the national body due to ongoing internal conflicts.

The decision, announced by IOC's Director of National Olympic Committee Relations, James Macleod, directly impacts the financial support the IOA receives from Olympic Solidarity programs, except for direct payments to athletes under Olympic scholarships.

IOC suspends IOA funding

Macleod stated in a letter to IOA President P.T. Usha that "ongoing internal disputes and governance issues" have clouded the organisation. With reciprocal allegations flying between members of the IOA executive council, particularly between Usha and treasurer Sahdev Yadav, the situation has reached a breaking point. According to the IOC, these unresolved issues create uncertainty, prompting the decision to halt all financial payments until clarity is provided.

At the heart of the conflict is the treasurer's failure to submit the necessary annual financial reports, a responsibility critical for maintaining financial compliance with the IOC. Usha, in a press release, accused Yadav of negligence, which she claims has "severe financial repercussions" for Indian athletes. Without these funds, programs supporting athlete development are jeopardised, threatening India's preparation for future international competitions.

Yadav, meanwhile, has not remained silent. He recently pointed to a loss of ₹24 crore due to a faulty sponsorship agreement with Reliance India Limited (RIL), sparking further tension within the organisation. Usha has refuted these claims, arguing that the financial management failures highlights the need for structural reform within the IOA, including the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

PT Usha has been advocating for the ratification of Raghuram Iyer as the CEO since January 2024, but the executive committee has yet to approve the move. According to Usha, this role is crucial for improving accountability and operational efficiency within the organization, particularly as India gears up to bid for the 2036 Olympics.

The IOC's suspension of funds raises the stakes for the IOA. With financial support now hanging in the balance, Indian athletes may suffer the consequences of this ongoing power struggle. Usha's call for reforms is more urgent than ever, but whether the IOA can resolve its internal disputes remains uncertain.
