The Surfing Federation of India (SFI) has officially announced the much-anticipated sixth edition of the Indian Open of Surfing (IOS), a marquee event on the national sporting calendar and the second leg of the National Surfing Championship series.

Slated to unfold from 30 May to 1 June 2025, this prestigious tournament will once again transform Sasihithlu Beach in Mangalore, Karnataka into a vibrant amphitheatre of surf, skill and spirited competition.

Indian Open of Surfing Returns for Sixth Edition at Sasihithlu Beach Mangalore from May 30 to June 1 2025

Recognised by the International Surfing Association, IOS is not just a test of athletic prowess but a celebration of India's burgeoning surfing culture. Hosted by the Mantra Surf Club and organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation, this year's edition is particularly significant. It follows hot on the heels of the International Surfing Festival Kerala - Varkala 2025, making it a crucial stop in the National Championship Series that determines the rankings and fate of India's elite surfers.

Riding High on Momentum

Last year marked a landmark moment for Indian surfing. For the first time ever, India secured surfing quotas for a multisport event-the 2026 Asian Games-thanks to stellar performances at the Asian Surf Championship 2024 in the Maldives. Now, the Indian Open of Surfing offers athletes a golden chance to improve their national standings and strengthen their case for the Asian Surf Championship qualifier later this year.

Mr Arun Vasu, President of SFI, echoed the gravity of the moment:

"We are pleased to announce the sixth edition of the Indian Open of Surfing - the premier surfing event on the west coast since its inception. In 2024, our surfers created history. marking a significant milestone that has elevated the sport's profile across the country."

Stars on the Surf Horizon

Names like Kishore Kumar, Kamali P, Ajeesh Ali, Sanjay Selvamani, Harish Muthu, and Srikanth D are expected to headline the contest, riding into Sasihithlu with impressive credentials from recent international and national championships. Their performances not only bring excitement to the event but also serve as a beacon for aspiring surfers across India.

Mr Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of SFI and Director of Mantra Surf Club, expressed his pride in the event's growth:

"This championship holds a special place in my heart. I hope this year's event is even more successful and impactful, especially as the sport has gained newfound recognition."

Catching the Next Wave: Grom Search Initiative

Before the IOS kicks off, a special Grom Search will be held at Panambur Beach, led by the Surfing Swami Foundation in collaboration with the Panambur Surfing School, Mantra Surf Club, and Indica Surf School. This grassroots programme aims to discover and nurture Karnataka's young coastal talent, offering them structured coaching, mentorship, and a shot at future stardom in the world of surfing.

As anticipation builds, Sasihithlu Beach readies itself to welcome a new wave of champions. With high stakes, crashing waves, and passionate surfers, the 6th Indian Open of Surfing is set to be a sun-kissed spectacle of sport, spirit, and surf culture.
