Indian Prez and Prince Charles to inaugurate CWG

By Abdul Nisar
New Delhi, Sep 28: Indian government officials reported that Delhi Commonwealth Games would be inaugurated by both Indian President Pratibha Patil and Prince Charles.

Controversy over the inauguration mounted on Monday, Sep 27 after a British tabloid's report that the Games will be inaugurated by Prince Charles. Traditionally Queen Elizabeth II, who is the ceremonial head of the Commonwealth, inaugurates the event. Since she is skipping the Games, for the first time in 40 years, Prince Charles will represent her and read out the Queen's baton message.

Earlier on Monday, Prince Charles' office had told that he will declare the Games open.

"There is no row. Both The Prince of Wales and The President of India will have a prominent role in the opening ceremony in Delhi. The Queen has asked The Prince of Wales to represent her at the opening of the Commonwealth Games. We cannot be specific about the choreography but The Prince will read out The Queen's baton message, ending by declaring the Games open," described the statement by Prince Charles' office.

Later Indian officials revealed that the controversy was fixed. Prince Charles will read the Queen's statement and President Patil will say 'let the Games begin'.
