Two Indian swimmers, Bharat Sachdeva and Shaaswat Sharma, have successfully completed a one-way swim across the 32-km stretch of Palk Strait, famously known as Ram Setu, in a time of 10 hours and 30 minutes.
This swim, tagged #SWIMFORCAUSE, was not just a test of endurance but also a platform to highlight several noble causes. The duo embarked on this journey from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkoti in India on April 14th, 2024, at 5:00 am, under the watchful eyes of an expert crew and external observer to ensure the swim adhered to set regulations.

The primary aim of this challenging expedition was to promote adventure sports and open-water swimming in India, highlighting the importance of water safety and drowning prevention.
Bharat and Shaaswat's swim also carried a message of universal brotherhood and friendship towards neighbouring countries. The swimmers, through their courageous feat, sought to draw attention to the need for better infrastructure and investments in swimming in India, hoping to inspire young talent to take up the sport professionally.
Bharat Sachdeva shared his joy, equating the swim's success to winning a medal for India. He emphasized the goal of drawing attention to the sport's needs in the country. "Our efforts will be successful when we see more young talent from India choosing swimming and representing the country on prestigious platforms," he stated.
Shaaswat Sharma highlighted the swim's spiritual and cultural significance, expressing his pride in contributing to the spirit of universal brotherhood while urging for more support for swimming as a key sport in India.
Bharat, a health and wellness consultant, international swimmer, and Ironman Triathlete, has worked with notable Indian boxers like MC Mary Kom and Vikas Krishan Yadav in visualization and breathwork.
Shaaswat, a technical architect, national medalist in swimming, and triathlete, holds multiple records and over 500 medals, including titles for the fastest 2K swimmer at the Goa Swimathon 2024 and a 10KM swim at the Delhi International Swimathon.
To undertake this significant swim, Bharat and Shaaswat secured permissions from various authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs, India (MEA), the Ministry of Defence, India (MoD), the Ministry of Health, India (MoHFW), and the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka.
These approvals ensured the swim was conducted safely and in compliance with international regulations, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this remarkable achievement.
The successful completion of the swim by Bharat Sachdeva and Shaaswat Sharma stands as a testament to human endurance, teamwork, and the spirit of sportsmanship. It serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across India and underscores the importance of supporting and developing sports talent in the country.
