The Indian Women's Hockey Team displayed immense heart but ultimately went down 3-5 to a sharp and clinical Australia A outfit in their opening match of the Australia Tour at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
From the very first whistle, Australia A seized the initiative, setting a relentless tempo that caught India off guard. It took just three minutes for the home side to break the deadlock, with Neasa Flynn finishing a well-constructed move to put Australia A ahead.

The pressure mounted swiftly, and India found themselves on the back foot as Olivia Downes (9') and Ruby Harris (11') capitalised on defensive lapses to extend the hosts' advantage to a commanding 3-0 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter brought little respite for India as Australia A continued to pile on the pressure. Tatum Stewart (21') found the target from a penalty corner, further stretching their lead to 4-0. However, showing remarkable resilience, India clawed one back through Mahima Tete (27'), whose deft field goal injected renewed energy into the visitors. As the teams headed into half-time, India trailed 1-4 but had found a glimmer of momentum to build upon.
After the break, Australia A resumed their aggressive approach, and their persistence paid dividends when Kendra Fitzpatrick (44') slotted home to make it 5-1. Refusing to bow out quietly, India struck back almost immediately. Vice-captain Navneet Kaur (45') showcased her class with a fine goal, narrowing the deficit to 2-5 as India mounted a spirited fightback.
The final quarter was an exhibition of India's never-say-die attitude. They created several opportunities and were rewarded once more when Lalremsiami (50') produced a composed finish to further reduce the margin. With the score at 5-3, the Indians pressed hard for more, but Australia A held their nerve to secure the win.
Despite the result, the Indian team's spirit and fightback in the face of adversity were commendable. Adding a poignant layer to the contest, the Indian players took to the field wearing black armbands, mourning the innocent lives lost in the tragic Pahalgam attack on 22 April. In a moving display of solidarity and respect, the team has pledged to wear the black armbands for the remainder of the tour.
The Indian Women's Hockey Team will not have long to dwell on the result. They are set to lock horns with Australia A once again in the second match of the series on Sunday, 27 April at 13:40 hrs IST. With the taste of battle fresh and lessons learnt, the Indian side will be eager to bounce back stronger and showcase their trademark grit and flair.
