India's Gaming Sector Upbeat With Modi Govt's Announcement to Establish NCoE for AVGC-XR

New Delhi, Sep 19: The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the creation of the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR).

Set to be established in Mumbai, Maharashtra, this pioneering initiative follows the 2022-23 budget announcement by the Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, which promised the formation of an AVGC Task Force.

As esports gained official recognition as a 'multi-sport event' from the Indian government, the gaming industry has flourished, with various states backing its growth.

Recently, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES), scheduled for February 2025 in New Delhi, which will feature esports tournaments for popular games like Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), World Cricket Championship (WCC), and eFootball. This underscores India's commitment to fostering a thriving gaming ecosystem.

In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Modi encouraged Indian game developers and creators to leave their mark on the global stage. The NCoE will play a key role in this vision by focusing on developing India's intellectual property (IP) for domestic and international markets.

A prime example is Indus Battle Royale, developed by Pune-based SuperGaming, which recently entered open beta and is a testament to India's rising prominence in the global gaming scene.

Roby John, CEO and Co-founder of SuperGaming, praised the NCoE's incubation hub model, likening its potential impact to that of IITs in engineering and IIMs in management.

"The NCoE will nurture startups, foster innovation, and support companies that could shape the next generation of gaming experiences," he said. "Our work on Indus, a Made-in-India battle royale game, aligns perfectly with the NCoE's focus on creating IP that draws from India's rich cultural history."

The Indian gaming industry has not only seen rapid growth but has also drawn the attention of industry leaders and gamers alike. Prime Minister Modi has personally engaged with prominent Indian gamers such as Animesh Agarwal (8Bit Thug), Naman Mathur (Mortal), and Payal Dhare (PayalGaming), sparking discussions about the industry's potential.

Animesh Agarwal, CEO and Co-founder of 8Bit Creatives, commended the establishment of the NCoE. "This platform will provide young enthusiasts access to cutting-edge technology and mentorship, empowering them to enter the industry," he said. He believes the NCoE will bolster the development of Made-in-India game titles that reflect India's cultural heritage, thereby positioning Indian content creators on the global gaming stage.

The NCoE will offer specialized training programs to equip both beginners and professionals with the latest skills in AVGC-XR technologies. Companies like CyberPowerPC, known for its high-performance custom gaming PCs, are poised to meet the demand for powerful technology in the growing AVGC-XR sector.

Vishal Parekh, COO of CyberPowerPC India, remarked, "The NCoE will provide a platform for individuals to harness rapidly advancing technology to further develop their craft. The government's support is crucial, and we at CyberPowerPC are excited to contribute to this growth."

The establishment of the NCoE aligns with the career aspirations of India's Gen-Z demographic, opening up new career paths in the AVGC-XR sector. Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, praised the NCoE's potential to enhance India's entertainment landscape.

"The NCoE will synergize animation, VFX, gaming, comics, and more, creating unique experiences for everyone," he said. Rathee emphasized the importance of combining these sectors, as exemplified by NODWIN Gaming's IPs, including Comic Con, DreamHack India, and BGMS Season 3.
