Ahead of the February 2025 NBA trade deadline, the Minnesota Timberwolves made a significant effort to acquire Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. Reports from NBA insider Jake Fischer suggest that Minnesota was actively exploring trade possibilities in the final days before the deadline. The Timberwolves hoped to find ways to maneuver under the NBA's second luxury tax apron, which would allow them to bundle contracts and make room for Durant's $51 million salary this season. Their goal was to pair Durant with their rising star, Anthony Edwards.
This pursuit made sense for Minnesota. The Timberwolves have been searching for a reliable second option to support Edwards. Since trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, the team has relied on Julius Randle to fill that role, but Randle's performance has been inconsistent. Durant, on the other hand, would have provided a major upgrade, bringing elite scoring, playmaking, and leadership to the team. His all-around game would have complemented Edwards’ scoring ability and bolstered the Timberwolves' playoff aspirations.
