Inside the Timberwolves' Effort to Land Kevin Durant Before the NBA Trade Deadline

By Tanisha Chhabra

Ahead of the February 2025 NBA trade deadline, the Minnesota Timberwolves made a significant effort to acquire Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. Reports from NBA insider Jake Fischer suggest that Minnesota was actively exploring trade possibilities in the final days before the deadline. The Timberwolves hoped to find ways to maneuver under the NBA's second luxury tax apron, which would allow them to bundle contracts and make room for Durant's $51 million salary this season. Their goal was to pair Durant with their rising star, Anthony Edwards.

This pursuit made sense for Minnesota. The Timberwolves have been searching for a reliable second option to support Edwards. Since trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, the team has relied on Julius Randle to fill that role, but Randle's performance has been inconsistent. Durant, on the other hand, would have provided a major upgrade, bringing elite scoring, playmaking, and leadership to the team. His all-around game would have complemented Edwards’ scoring ability and bolstered the Timberwolves' playoff aspirations.

Kevin Durant

Edwards, who has long considered Durant his favorite player, would have embraced the opportunity to play alongside him. The two had a positive connection during their time together at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Edwards' admiration for Durant has been well-documented. This personal connection would have likely made for a seamless fit both on and off the court. Pairing these two dynamic players would have created a potent offensive duo for the Timberwolves.

Despite the serious interest, the Timberwolves ultimately stood pat and did not make a trade before the deadline. They were one of four teams that did not make a move. Currently sitting seventh in the Western Conference, the Timberwolves are just one game behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the final guaranteed playoff spot. However, with the Suns only 3.5 games behind, Minnesota's path to the postseason could involve the Play-In Tournament.

If the Timberwolves miss the playoffs altogether, the decision not to pursue Durant could be criticized as a missed opportunity. While the team has been competitive this season, adding a player of Durant's caliber could have significantly improved their chances of making a deep playoff run. The Timberwolves will need to evaluate whether their decision was the right one as they continue their push for the postseason.
