It also costs India two medals (400m & 400m relay) at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships.

Vithya Ramaraj (in photo) posts her first sub-53 timing as she clocks 52.97 seconds to win one of the women's 400m heats. Anjali Devi was the fastest on the day as she clocked 52.89 seconds and also breached the Asian Games qualification standard. Complete women's 400m heat results to follow.

No Asian Games qualification from women's 20km racewalk as well but gold medallist Bhawana Jatt (1:37.03 seconds) broke the 17-year-old Inter-State record previously held by Deepmala Devi.

Only two Indian elite athletes, Neeraj Chopra and Avinash Sable, were exempted from the tournament as the duo has been training abroad since the beginning of the season and are focussing on bigger prizes at the World Championships.
Hima Das is another big absentee from the Inter States as the sprinter has been suffering from a hamstring injury and is out of the Asian Games, AFI chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair has confirmed a day before the event.
The Inter-State, a domestic event, has also allowed athletes from Sri Lanka and Maldives to compete at the event at Kalinga Stadium. Interestingly, the venue has been trying to pull off a commendable feat of hosting two sporting events on the same days as the four-nation Intercontinental Cup football matches are being also played at the venue.
Both the tournaments' schedules are directly colliding on the opening day and June 18, which is also the final of the Intercontinental Cup with India already qualifying for the showdown.
Odisha sports department solved the issue by tweaking the Inter-State schedule a bit as on those two days AFI will only host the morning sessions. The remaining session will be held on June 19 as the event was extended by a day.
The opening day of the Inter-State Athletics Championships will see four long-distance races early in the morning with men's 20km racewalk starting the tournament as early as 5:30 AM IST.
