Inter-State Athletics Championships 2023: 62nd National Inter-State Athletics Championships has headed into its second day with two sessions (morning and evening) taking place on Friday (June 16, 2023). Two gold medals were a stake in the morning session as men's and women's 35km racewalks took place before the day broke. (Scroll down below for the latest updates and results from Day 2)
Earlier on Day 1, four finals took place with Kartik Kumar booking his Asian Games ticket by winning the 10000m race while breaching the qualification timing. Federation Cup champion Gulveer Singh also posted the qualification timing and is likely to accompany Kartik to Huangzhou later this year.


Discus throw veteran Seema Punia missed out on Asian Games qualification as the 40-year-old athlete could only hurl the discus to 56.60m while the standard was set at 57m. She, nevertheless, took another national-level gold medal.

Agasara Nandini won the heptathlon 200m dash in the final event of the day to surpass reigning Asian Games champion Swapna Barman at the top with 3450 points.

Women's triple jumper Sheena NV breached the Asian Games qualification standard as she leaped 13.60m to take the gold. Nayana James jumped 13.33m for the silver medal while Mallala Anusha settle for bronze.

Tejaswin Shankar takes lead in Decathlon

Tejaswin Shankar took a big lead of 4209 on opening day of decathlon as he made a world quality jump of 2.20m in his forte high jump event. He also won the shot put event with a 13.04 metre throw and leapt 7.30m in long jump as well. The complete result to follow.

Tamil Nadu reigned supreme in 400m mixed relay while Haryana, who led the race untill the third change, were disqualified from the race for dropping the baton at the finish line. The complete result to follow soon

Gold: Krishan Kumar Silver: Mohammed Afsal Bronze: Pradeep S

Krishan Kumar won the 800m gold to continue his dominance in the discipline with a timing of 4:06.07 seconds. He, along with Mohammed Afsal, Pradip S also cleared the Asian Games qualification standard.

Gold: KM Deeksha Silver: Harmilan Bains Bronze: Chanda

KM Deeksha overtook national record holder Harmilan Bains to 1500m gold with a timing of 4:06.07 seconds. Harmilan finished with a timing of 4:08.50 seconds.

All of Kumarage, Anas, Ajmal and Amoj Jacob breached the Asian Games qualification standard.

Sri Lanka's Kalinga Kumararage clocked 45.64 seconds to take top spot in men's 400m Muhammad Anas, Muhammad Ajmal and Amoj Jacob clocked sub-46 timings as well to take the remaining spots. However, it's not clear if the Sri Lankan is eligible for the gold medal in Inter-State. We will confirm that shortly after speaking to the AFI officials at the venue.

Anjali Devi Kundu put up her best show at the Inter-State yet again as she clocked 51.48 seconds. Fellow Haryana athlete Himanshi Mallik clocked a commendable 51.76 seconds as well to take the silver medal.

Tamil Nadu's Shiva Kumar clocked 10.37 seconds to win the men's 100m gold. Harjot Singh was second with a timing of 10.45 seconds. National record holder Amiya Mallick finished last in a closely-contested final. Complete result to follow

Gold: Jyothi Yarraji; Silver: Srabani Nandi; Bronze: Himasree Roy

Jyothi Yarraji stretched her reign in 100m too as she clocked 11.46 seconds to win the women's 100m event at Inter-State Athletics. She beat local favourite and Federation Cup champion Srabani Nanda to gold medal in a photo finish.
Kripal Singh took the men's discus throw gold with 57.39 metre throw. The effort, however, was short of Asian Games qualification standard of 58m. Complete result to follow soon.
It's going to be a busy afternoon session on Day 2 with as many as 13 gold medals on the offer, including the much-awaited 400m and 100m finals in both men's and women's categories.

Harjit Singh clocked 10.48 seconds to set the pace ahead of national record holder and local favourite Amiya Mallick in the men's 100m semis. Both of them qualified for the final later in the evening. Complete result to follow next.

Srabani Nanda and Jyothi Yarraji set the pace in women's 100m semifinal heats. The duo will be facing off for the gold medal in the final.

The men's 400m semifinal heats saw Muhammad Ajmal (in photo) and Muhammad Anas fight to the finish line as the duo posted sub-46 timings to dominate the heats. They also breached the Asian Games qualification standard of 46.17 seconds.
The 20km racewalk saw some of the familiar faces winning as Sandeep Kumar took the honour in the men's race while former national champion Bhawna Jat won the women's race in adverse conditions as humidity saw the champions struggle to be near the Asian Games qualification timings. They, however, already have qualified for the Asiad earlier in the year.
The men's and women's 400m preliminary heats also took place in the single session on the day with national champion Mohammad Anas setting the pace while Anjali Devi Kundu and R Vithya Ramaraj were the only two to go past the sub-53 timings.
The men's and women's 100m saw national champion Amiya Mullick dominate the preliminary heats while women's 100m hurdler national champion Jyothi Yarraji ran the sprints and was faster than Srabani Nanda and Dhanalakshmi.
Only the morning session took place on the day as the venue Kalinga Stadium was reserved for the football tournament Hero Intercontinental Cup 2023. The schedule of both tournaments collides again on June 18 when India vs Lebanon final takes place in the evening. The Inter-State will only host the morning session on that day too as the tournament was stretched by the additional day to accommodate the two lost sessions.
