IOA, ministers selected me as OC chairman: Kalmadi

By Abdul Nisar
New Delhi, Aug 19: Suresh Kalmadi, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CWG OC) Chairman, opposed the charges of tampering the original bid documents of the 2010 Commonwealth games.

On Wednesday, Aug 18, CNN-IBN reported that the original bid documents submitted to 72 Commonwealth countries in 2003 were allegedly tampered. The channel reported that in the original bid cleared by the Vajpayee government in 2003, the Chairman of the CWG OC was to have been nominated by the government, while the IOA president's position was to be that of Vice Chairman.

The report claimed that in the updated bid copy, terms like 'government nominee' and 'IOA President' were removed, and enabled Kalmadi to become the OC Chairman when the Committee was finally set up on Feb 10, 2005.

Suresh Kalmadi told the media on Thursday, Aug 19, that the former sports minister Vikram Verma was bringing the issue after so many years. He also told that International Olympic Committee made the decision over his selection as the CWG chairman and the group of ministers accepted it unanimously.
