IOA tightlipped on 70 torchbearers' 2.5 kms run

By Staff

New Delhi, Apr 16 (UNI) A rattled Indian Olympic Association (IOA), continues to be an object of mockery as it now faces a huge task of accomodating 70 torchbearers for a distance of only 2.5kms.

The IOA is already under a lot of pressure to safeguard the Olympic torch in India which has been a target of demonstration all over the world.

The IOA president Suresh Kalmadi seemed least bothered about the security and had no answer as to how the torchbearers will be accomodated over a distance of 2.5km.

''We will manage them and all of them will take part tomorrow.'' ''For security you will have to ask the government officials.

The security measures that we have taken are normal but we don't want the scenes of London and Paris to be repoeated here.

''We are not afraid of any movement, we just want the torch to be safe,'' he said.

India has already trimmed the route of torch relay from 9 kms fearing Tibetan protestors might try to disrupt the prcession.

The governing body in India has made umpteen changes - from changing the venue to shortening distance of the relay - since the announcement about the Torch relay came.

Although, many of the celebrities including Kiran Bedi, actress Soha Ali Khan, Bhaichung Bhutia and Sachin Tendulkar, which is the latest name to have joined the list, have pulled out from the relay, the torch still will go across a lot of hands during its visit to India.
