Ionescu Leads Liberty To Commissioners Cup Final With Control Of Destiny

The New York Liberty moved back into the spotlight with an 86-64 win over the Washington Mystics, booking a place in the Commissioner’s Cup final and strengthening the push for a future WNBA title, with Sabrina Ionescu insisting the team now controls what happens next.

The Liberty are chasing a second Commissioner’s Cup crown after lifting the trophy in 2023 and returning to the final in 2024, and recent history suggests this run matters, as at least one Cup finalist has reached the WNBA Finals in three of the last four seasons.

Ionescu Leads Liberty to Cup Final

Sabrina Ionescu, back on court after a back injury, believes the Liberty can dictate their path. "If we keep playing the right way, taking it one game at a time, we're kind of in control of our own destiny," Ionescu said, as reported by The Athletic.

Ionescu had missed seven games before the meeting with Washington yet still logged 26 minutes, contributing five points, three assists and three rebounds. The guard returned shortly after experiencing New York’s celebrations, following the New York Knicks’ first NBA championship since 1973.

The outing also carried major historical weight for the WNBA. Ionescu became the fastest player in league history to record 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists, doing so in 183 games, which is 60 games fewer than any previous player to reach those combined marks.

The key statistics from Ionescu’s comeback performance and career milestone are shown below.

Category Figure
Minutes vs Mystics 26
Points vs Mystics 5
Assists vs Mystics 3
Rebounds vs Mystics 3
Games to 3,000 pts / 1,000 reb / 1,000 ast 183
Games fewer than previous record 60

The 22-point margin over the Mystics underlined the Liberty’s defensive control, while coach ChrisDeMarco highlighted the influence of the returning star. ChrisDeMarco explained that Ionescu’s presence was clear, praising the decisions made on court after a challenging spell without action.

Center Jonquel Jones linked the Commissioner’s Cup journey directly to wider season aims, noting the trend of Cup finalists also appearing in the WNBA Finals. "It's a pretty high number of teams that go to the Commissioner's Cup championship that play in the Finals," Jones said, stressing how this stage can shape championship runs.

Breanna Stewart pointed to the Liberty finally having depth and continuity across the roster. "We're feeling a little bit more complete as far as having our whole roster. Now we're starting to build. Beginning of the season, we were trying to work through some things and just get wins when we could. This is like our Day One."

The Liberty now enter the Commissioner’s Cup final with a recent trophy, a fit Ionescu and a history-backed link between Cup success and Finals appearances, placing the focus on consistent performances rather than guarantees as the franchise targets another strong push for the WNBA championship.
