Two-time Olympian Sajan Prakash, a trailblazer in Indian swimming, reached a significant milestone on January 17, becoming the first swimmer in 12 years to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award.

Receiving the honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he called it a "victory for swimming," celebrating the long-overlooked contributions of his sport. Sajan's journey is one of resilience and excellence.

Sajan Prakash

The only Indian male swimmer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, he etched history by meeting the 'A' standard for the Tokyo 2020 Games. While injuries kept him from Paris 2024, his accolades remain formidable. Ranked No. 1 nationally and in South Asia, Sajan has achieved notable positions, including fifth in Asia and 11th at the 2018 World Championships.

Looking ahead, Sajan is preparing for the National Games in Uttarakhand, competing in the 50m, 100m, and 200m butterfly events, aiming for podium finishes. However, his "singular focus" remains the 2026 Asian Games, where he is determined to leave a lasting legacy.

"After the 2026 Asian Games, I will decide on my swimming career. Right now, my target is a podium finish," said Sajan, hinting that retirement might follow his quest for Asian glory.

Reflecting on his journey, Sajan acknowledged swimming's struggle for recognition in India. "This award is a motivation for future generations. It's a step toward elevating swimming and inspiring others to build careers in it."

For now, his eyes remain firmly set on the pool, chasing excellence in his events and fostering a brighter future for Indian swimming. Whether or not the 2026 Asian Games mark the end of his journey, Sajan's legacy is already cemented as a pioneer who raised the bar for Indian aquatics.
