Jyoshna Sabar - From the Eastern Ghats to World Championships

Jyoshna Sabar's amazing achievement has a massive success story, which was depicted to MyKhel by her trainer, former Indian Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Mr. Ravi Kumar Katulu.

"Jyoshna is the star of Odisha. For the last three years, we are preparing for the Youth Championships. She is from a tribal place in Odisha. We picked her up from a school in remote Odisha for our High-Performance Centre. We hope to prepare her for the Olympics in 2032 or 2036," Ravi Kumar said to MyKhel in an exclusive interview.

Jyoshna hails from a remote place named Marlaba in the Gajapati district of Odisha, which doesn't even have any decent mode of transport. Sitting in the remote part of the Eastern Ghats, Marlaba lacks infrastructure. Hence Jyoshna was studying at a school near Berhampore, from where she got selected for the HPC programme of the Odisha Government.

"Gram Vikash is an NGO in Ganjam. We are providing equipment for the students of the residential school and helping them. We picked Jyoshna from there and I am supervising her for the last two years. She got a Silver and Bronze in the World Championships, but she has won two Silvers this time," Ravi Kumar added.

The Arjuna Awardee then depicted the amazing performance and grit of the 15-year-old, who has been preparing herself far away from the warmth of the family. Odisha's exemplary ethic to promote and nurture sports in their state and beyond is truly admirable, and with Preetismita, Jyoshna and other athletes, the success story only promises to enhance in the coming years.
