Jaques wary of Bayliss syndrome

By Staff

Sydney, Nov 7 (UNI) New opening batsman Phil Jaques will be wary of the threat posed by Sri Lankan coach Trevor Bayliss when he takes guard in the first Test starting at Gabba tomorrow.

Baylis was incidentally Jaques coach at New South Wales before taking the job of coaching the Sri Lankan side and will finds himself in the unusual situation of knowing more about his opposition than he does his own team, whom he joined only three months ago. In the case of Jaques, that could prove to be an advantage.

''I've had a fair bit to do with (Jaques) in the last nine to 10 years,''Bayliss said, who once dropped Jaques from the New South Wales (NSW) under-19 team.

''What I am aware of I'm sure he is aware of as well, so I'm sure he will be working on those areas. If we set a field for him, he'll probably have a smile on his face when he walks out.'' Looking forward to matching wits with his former coach, Jaques said, ''I guess it's just a matter of whoever is better on the day, whether they execute their plans or I execute my plans.'' The 28-year-old Jaques has turned down the opportunity to play for the England 'A' team when he was playing for Northamptonshire, but despite scoring 10,491 first-class runs to make the baggy green his own, the southpaw has few regrets over his decision.

''I've always wanted to play for Australia from the day I first picked up a cricket bat,'' he was quoted as saying by the Australian media.

''I think it would have been unfinished business for me if I hadn't come back (to Australia from the UK) when I was given an opportunity to establish myself in the NSW team.'' Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will decide whether to go with a fifth bowler in the first Test.
