Jathani storms into semi-finals

Mumbai, Dec 18 (UNI) Rohit Jathani of Tolani College, Andheri beat A Jadhav of CKT, New Panvel on points in a close contest to storm into the flyweight semi-finals, in the Inter Collegiate Boxing Championship for boys and girls, organised and hosted by Rizvi College, Bandra on Tuesday.

Jathani got off to a good start, when he had Jadhav on the ropes early in the opening round. His aggression reflected his penchant for a quick win, but Jadhav battled hard and held on.

As the contest entered the third and final round, both pugilists fought well, giving little away. It only was a late burst in the closing stages that proved decisive for Jathani who won a tight bout on points.

In another close contest that went all the way, S Nadkarni of Patkar College overcame a determined Z Valles of St Gonsalo Garcia, Vasai on points with the former snatching a 19-18 verdict to advance to the light-heavy quarter-finals.

It was a rewarding day for hosts Rizvi, as Rohit Suvarna entered the flyweight semi-finals and Roshan Chawan sailed into the bantam semi-finals, both earning RSC II verdicts.

But A Kapileshwari of Ruia College spoiled the Rizvi party when he upset formidable Samrat Patil of Rizvi Law 16-14 on points, in a bantam weight quarter-final bout.
