Russian Javelin thrower Abukamova stripped off 2008 Olympics silver medal

Lausanne, Sep 14: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Russian javelin thrower Maria Abukamova has been stripped of her 2008 Olympic Games silver medal after she was tested positive for using performance enhancing drugs.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the IOC said: "Maria Abukamova, 30, of the Russian Federation, competing in athletics (javelin throw event), has been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, in which she ranked 2nd and was awarded the silver medal."

"Re-analysis of Abakumova's samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol)," the IOC added.

Furthermore, the Committee requested the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to modify Abakumova's results accordingly, "and to consider any further action within its own competence".
