Jeev falters: Tiger roars, wins WGC invitational

By Staff

Arkon (Ohio) Aug 6: Jeev Milkha Singh reserved his worst for the last, carding a horrendous six-over 76 for a poor tied 51st even as Firestone bared witness to a sensational come-from-behind, eight-stroke win by World No. One Tiger Woods at the WGC's eight million dollar Bridgestone Invitational.

On a treacherous course that tested to the hilt a golfer's will and skills, Jeev failed miserably, mixing two doubles bogeys and four bogeys with just a couple of birdies. Overnight tied 34th, the Ace Indian golfer ended his campaign with a total of 14-over 294, a whopping 19 strokes behind the winner.

And what a win it had been! Even by his own standards, Tiger's final round prowl was best the master had come up with in the recent past.

Going into the final round with a stroke off the pace, the World Number One leaped ahead of the field with a flawless five-under 65 while his competitors struggled to stay sub-par.

Infact, such was his domination that only Tiger managed an under-par aggregate with his nearest rivals, Justin Rose of England and Rory Sabbatini of South Africa, finishing even-par.

While the Englishman produced a 68 to jump to tied second spot, leader for the three rounds, Sabbatini lost his calm and the plot, buckling under pressure to card a last-round 74.

It was a deja vu for the South African as he had lost a one-shot lead to Woods in the Wachovia Championship earlier this year.

Tiger, who go to Oklahoma to defend the PGA Championship, pocketed 1.35 million dollars with the win.
