J.J. Spaun emerged victorious at the U.S. Open, overcoming challenging weather and personal hurdles. Despite a rocky start, Spaun's determination shone through at Oakmont.
"I just tried to dig deep," said the 34-year-old Californian, now a major champion. His remarkable shots on the 17th and 18th holes secured his win, with a 65-foot putt sealing his place in history.

His final score of 1-under 279 was achieved with a closing round of 72, the highest for a U.S. Open winner in 15 years. However, the focus was on his impressive putting, totaling 401.5 feet over four days. Spaun joined legends like Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus as one of only five players to finish birdie-birdie at this tournament.
The rain-soaked course posed difficulties for many competitors. Third-round leader Sam Burns struggled with two double bogeys on the back nine, finishing tied for seventh. Adam Scott, the sole major champion in the top 10 after Saturday, dropped to 12th after shooting 41 in the rain.
Tyrell Hatton briefly contended but ended tied for fourth after bogeying the last two holes. Robert MacIntyre emerged as Spaun's closest challenger, setting a target at 1 over par before Spaun's decisive finish.
Spaun's comeback began after a rain delay and a pep talk from his coaches urging him to stay calm. This advice led to crucial birdies on the par-5 12th and the 14th holes, giving him a solo lead at even par. "They just said, Just let it come to you, be calm," Spaun recalled.
Viktor Hovland, who played alongside Spaun, remarked on his impressive performance: "To watch him hole the putt on 12 down the hill there was unreal." Hovland noted Spaun's ability to make challenging putts under pressure.
Spaun's Father's Day began with an early morning trip to the drug store for his sick daughter, Violet. Despite this chaotic start, he managed to focus and deliver an outstanding performance on the course. "It was kind of a rough start to the morning," he admitted.
His coach, Adam Schriber, highlighted the sacrifices made for such moments: "We all sacrifice so much to be here." Spaun's victory was not just about skill but also resilience in overcoming adversity both on and off the course.
Spaun's triumph at Oakmont is a testament to perseverance and skill under pressure. His ability to maintain composure amidst personal challenges and adverse weather conditions underscores his deserving win at this prestigious tournament.
