Nikola Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP, has chosen to delay signing a contract extension with the Denver Nuggets this summer. This decision aims for a potentially larger financial gain in the future. Despite this choice, Jokic's position with the team remains secure for now, as he has at least two years left on his current contract.
Jokic's existing deal includes $55.2 million for this season and $59 million for the 2026-27 season. Additionally, there is a player option for 2027-28 valued at nearly $63 million. On Tuesday, Jokic became eligible to sign an extension that could have added three years and approximately $212 million to his contract.

By postponing the extension until next summer, Jokic stands to benefit from a more lucrative deal. He would then be eligible to extend his contract by four years, potentially securing even more money than what was offered this summer. Josh Kroenke, vice chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, mentioned that the team presented both options to Jokic and will honour his decision.
Kroenke stated, "I'm not sure if he's going to accept it or not because we're also going to explain every financial parameter around him, signing now versus signing later." This approach ensures that Jokic is fully informed about the financial implications of his decision.
The 30-year-old Serbian player recently completed a remarkable season. He became the first NBA center to average a triple-double with 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists per game. In MVP voting, he finished second to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from Oklahoma City.
Jokic joins Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average a triple-double. During the playoffs, Jokic helped lead the Nuggets to significant victories before they were eventually eliminated by the Thunder in seven games during the Western Conference semifinals.
Throughout the regular season, Jokic set a franchise record with 34 triple-doubles. Among these performances was an impressive 61-point triple-double game. His postseason averages were also notable, with 26.2 points and 12.7 rebounds per game.
The Nuggets concluded their season with three consecutive wins and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in a seven-game series during the first playoff round. Although they fell short against Oklahoma City Thunder in the semifinals, Jokic's contributions were pivotal throughout their playoff journey.
