Jokic And Wembanyama Deliver OT Thriller As Nuggets Edge Spurs

Nikola Jokic edged a classic duel with Vitor Wembanyama as the Denver Nuggets defeated the San Antonio Spurs 136-134 in overtime, with both stars trading standout plays and generous praise after a tense contest at Ball Arena.

San Antonio arrived on 11 straight wins and with Wembanyama firmly in the NBA MVP conversation, yet Denver extended its own streak to eight victories, prompting Nuggets head coach David Adelman to say: "I would pay to watch these two teams play."

Jokic finished with 40 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds, and also added three blocks, marking the third time in Jokic’s career that he recorded at least 40 points, 10 assists and three blocks, a feat surpassed in the statistics era since 1973-74 only by Dwyane Wade, who achieved it five times.

Wembanyama produced 34 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks for the Spurs, who led 107-96 with 9:08 left in regulation before Denver answered with a 17-8 burst to force overtime, where Jokic scored seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Wembanyama managed two points.

Wembanyama reflected on the matchup with Jokic and the late collapse from San Antonio, stating: "I think it was an amazing game. Very fun. One of the most fun games. I wish we could have closed it out. Everything that happened tonight is good for us. It was a real test against a team that's playing for something right now. It had a little bit of playoff vibes. They've got the best offensive player in the world. So, when you come into these games, you always have to be focused on defense."

Jokic responded with his own assessment of Wembanyama’s future impact on the NBA, saying: "I think the first time I played against him, I told you guys he's going to change the league. He's going to change basketball. I still think that. I think he has an opportunity, a chance to be the most unique basketball player to ever play the game."

The Nuggets improved their season record to 50-28, which is currently the fourth-best mark in the Western Conference, while the Spurs stand at 59-19 in second place, with both teams leaving the high-scoring game viewing the matchup as a valuable postseason-style test.
