Jonathan Kuminga Suffers Knee Bone Bruise: Warriors Injury Update

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has sustained a bone bruise in the left knee, according to a team announcement on Sunday, leaving a key rotation piece sidelined again as Golden State, now 25-21, tries to stay close in the Pacific Division play-off race.

The organisation said an MRI conducted on Friday confirmed the bone bruise, and medical staff will re-assess the knee in the coming days, creating short-term uncertainty about Kuminga’s availability as the Warriors sit three games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Lakers and continue to manage a tight Western Conference battle.

Kuminga sidelined by knee bone bruise

Kuminga’s injury occurred during Thursday’s 123-115 defeat to the Dallas Mavericks, when an awkward step on a drive to the rim with 3:52 left in the second quarter forced an exit, cutting short only his second consecutive appearance after Warriors coach Steve Kerr had left Kuminga out of the previous 16 games.

The setback came just after Kuminga had worked back into meaningful minutes because of Jimmy Butler’s season-ending knee issue, which had opened a larger role in the offence; the 23-year-old had reportedly requested a trade earlier in the week but suddenly appeared positioned for more responsibility during Golden State’s push toward the play-offs.

Before going down against Dallas, Kuminga scored 10 points in nine minutes, following a strong performance on Tuesday when the forward produced 20 points in 21 minutes off the bench in a 145-127 loss to the Toronto Raptors, though those efforts were not enough to prevent a second straight defeat for Golden State.

With the NBA trade deadline set for February 5, Kuminga’s future with the Warriors remains unclear, as management must judge the bone bruise recovery timeline, recent trade request and on-court contributions while the team weighs roster options for the final stretch of the regular season and aims to strengthen its position in the standings.

The Warriors will monitor Kuminga’s progress over the next few days, with medical updates likely to shape both short-term rotation choices and any trade discussions, as the franchise balances injury risk, depth needs and current form heading into a crucial stretch of the season.
