JSCA felicitates Vijay Merchant trophy winners

Jamshedpur,Jan 28 (UNI) The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has felicitated the Vijay Merchant (under-17) winning team at the Keenan stadium here.

Honouring the team members for creating history with a blazer and a cash award of Rs 1.70 lakhs (Rs ten thousand for each player), JSCA president Amitabh Chowdhary said yesterday that this was for the first time in the 72 years history of the Association(earlier Bihar Cricket Association)that any team from the state had won a national tournament.

The Jharkhand team defeated Vidarbha by 82 runs in the final at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad to lift the prestigious trophy.

Former Ranji player and the coach of the team, Samar Bose, said the team had self belief from the very begining as it did not lose a single match in the league phase.''The boys did an excellent job and made us proud,''he said.

Mr Chowdhary also announced that in a fine gesture the BCCI had issued a cheque of Rs 4.87 lakhs to the family member of JSCA cricketer Amit Kumar, who died in an accident in Mumbai last year.

Mr Chowdahry handed over the cheque to the mother of the late cricketer.
