Patiala, July 24: India's exuberant Judoka Tombi Devi from Manipur has qualified for 2008 Beijing Olympics by virtue of her excellent bronze-winning effort in 48 kg category in Asian Judo Championship held in Kuwait recently.
Tombi Devi, an employee of CRPF, is the first Indian Judoka to have won a gold medal in 48 kg category in International European Judo Tournament held in Istanbul recently. Tombi will also participate in the World Judo Championship in Brazil this September.
Talking to UNI, the secretary-general of Judo Federation of India, Mr Mukesh Kumar, said that Indian men and women Judokas were already in training at the NIS here under the supervision of foreign experts from North Korea, Kwak Yong Chol (for women Judokas) and Kim Won Hung (for men Judokas), along with Indian coaches JG Sharma, Surinder Singh, Satish Sharma and Suman Gogi. "The progress in the performance of Indian Judokas has started showing results which is very encouraging," the secretary-general said.
