Justin Thomas stays firmly in the hunt at the Players Championship, sitting at eight-under after two rounds at TPC Sawgrass. Thomas is four shots behind leader Ludvig Aberg, who moves to 12-under. The 2021 Players Championship winner is competing in only a second event since hip surgery four months earlier.
Thomas posts consecutive rounds of 68, a strong response after a difficult comeback at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The American believes consistent play across the final two rounds can keep trophy hopes alive. It was especially important to Thomas that late birdies moved the score closer to the leaders.

Aberg leads the Players Championship at the halfway stage after a second-round 63 gives a two-shot cushion over Xander Schauffele in second place. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy slip back, but Aberg builds momentum instead, helped by two eagles and six birdies during a standout front nine.
{TABLE_1}That front nine from Aberg matches the lowest opening-nine score ever recorded at the Players Championship. Aberg handles pressure while others struggle, holding a clear edge heading into the weekend. The Swede’s control around the greens, and ability to take chances when possible, keep the chasing pack at distance for now.
Reflecting on a second-round charge, Aberg explains how early momentum shapes the Players Championship round. "I got off to a really nice start, and then was able to keep it going," Aberg said. "Off the tee, I was struggling a little bit, mid-roundI got away with it a little bitand then it was nice to finish the last three holes with a couple of birdies and play some good golf."
Aberg also stresses steady thinking across TPC Sawgrass. "Obviously, it's a cliche, but you're just trying to take it hole by holewhen you chip in, those are a bonus. The thing I was most pleased with was that I was hitting some nice shots, I wasn't just fluking it. It was good golf and nice swings." His comments reflect confidence in both technique and mindset.
Thomas focuses on recovery and performance balance at the Players Championship after recent hip surgery. "It feels miles better. It's a crazy game we play," Thomas told reporters. "I'm four months post-surgery today. It's very difficult trying to balance all of it, the rehab and the expectations. It's just about trying to do all the things that I need to do, while also still trying to play really well and trying to win a golf tournament while I'm at it."
Thomas believes handling that mix of health work and competition is a key part of this Players Championship run. "I'm proud of myself, getting myself in contention through two days. But I've got two days left to try to keep playing well. It was nice to birdie two of the last three and put myself in contention. It's all you can do at this point. I've just got to keep trying to do the things I'm doing well, and sharpen up on a couple of things here and there." With Aberg ahead and Schauffele close, every shot across the weekend could shape the final outcome.
