Singapore, March 7: ONE Championship's first trip to the United States features a card that continues to flourish, and now that the organization has added a flyweight rematch four years in the making, there's more meat for you to sink your teeth into.
The rematch in question features former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat "The Kazakh" Akhmetov and Australian standout Reece "Lightning" McLaren, which will take place on Saturday, 6 May, at ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III live from the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
The two first met in 2019 at ONE: A NEW ERA in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix quarterfinals, where "The Kazakh" left victorious by unanimous decision. Now, they find themselves facing off once again, and the victor could get a shot at the ONE Flyweight World Title.
Akhmetov was last seen in June 2022 at ONE 158, where he improved his streak to five wins in a row, dispatching Japan's Tatsumitsu Wada with another one-sided performance to pick up the unanimous decision victory.
His place on the inaugural United States card will serve as a litmus test on his way back to the World Title that he parted ways with over five years ago.
Akhmetov's track record continues to grow strong in ONE, having beaten the likes of Danny "The King" Kingad and Haobin Ma during his recent run, as well as his latest adversary, McLaren, way back when.
The enigmatic Australian has come a long way since their first meeting, though. "Lightning" boasts an impressive two-fight winning streak off the back of a standout 2022, where he picked up victories over China's Xie Wei at ONE 158 as well as a highlight-reel knockout of Brazil's Windson Ramos to skyrocket in the ONE Flyweight rankings.
McLaren feels that he is coming into his own following a successful 12-month campaign in the flyweight division, and his upcoming clash against Akhmetov will give him the chance to right some wrongs and potentially earn a shot at the World Title.
