Karnatka beat Mahrashtra, Bengal

Srinagar, Jun 6 (UNI) Runners up of the last edition, West Bengal and title contender Goa shared points after a goalless draw while Karnataka beat Maharashtra 1-0 in the 62nd National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at Bakshi Stadium here today.

It was almost a 1-0 chance for Goa in the 72nd minute of the game when Denzil Franco unleashed a fiery aerial ball at goal on the third attempt. However, the ball hit the goal post and went over it.

In one of his brave attempt to save the goal, Bengal goalkeeper Abhra Mondal was injured when he was hit in his face by Goa striker Joaquim Abranches. He was later replaced by stand by goal keeper Somnath Khara.

Both the teams made several attempts to score but failed to convert them into goals.

Earlier in the first fixture of the day Karnataka beat Maharashtra 1-0.

Playing with a plan, both the team started attacking each other danger zone right from the word go.

However, they failed to score despite making some good moves.

After a goalless breather, Karnataka made a number of attempts but their forwards failed to find the net.

Maharashtra also earned a couple of scoring chances but could not but failed to make any headaway.

It was captain Vijay who scored all important goal in second half of the game for Karnataka after he put the ball into net from the top of the scoring circle.

Tomorrow, hosts Jammu and Kashmir will meet defending champion Punjab and Services will clash with Kerala in the quater-final leaque of the Championship.
