Kelsey Plum's remarkable performance led the Los Angeles Sparks to spoil the Golden State Valkyries' WNBA debut. A packed crowd of 18,064 filled Chase Center on Friday to witness the Valkyries' first game, marking the league's first expansion team since 2008. However, the Sparks triumphed with an 84-67 win, thanks to Plum's impressive 37 points.
Plum, who joined the Sparks from the Las Vegas Aces in February, set several records during her debut. She not only recorded six assists and five steals but also became the first player in WNBA history to achieve a 35-point, five-assist, and five-steal game. Her performance marked the highest points scored by any Sparks debutant and any player in a season opener.

Reflecting on her success, Plum credited her time with A'ja Wilson at Las Vegas as a valuable learning experience. "I have spent a lot of time learning, particularly from A'ja," Plum said. "Watching her pick her spots and just being intentional about when to be aggressive, when not to be aggressive."
Plum acknowledged that balancing aggression is still a work in progress for her. "I don't think I did a tremendous job balancing, but I'll continue to get better," she admitted. She emphasized that adapting to a new offense requires patience and finding rhythm with timing and positioning.
Natalie Nakase, Valkyries coach and former assistant for the Aces from 2022 to 2024, was not surprised by Plum's dominant display. "That is the Kelsey I am used to," Nakase stated. She highlighted Plum's ability to drive left fearlessly and her versatility in scoring options.
The Valkyries aim for their first WNBA victory against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Sparks will face off against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday as they continue their season.
