Diu, Jan 5: The rhythmic crash of the Arabian Sea provided the ultimate soundtrack on Monday (January 5) as the second edition of the Khelo India Beach Games (KIBG) 2026 was officially declared open.

Against the picturesque backdrop of the Blue Flag-certified Ghoghla Beach, over 2,100 athletes from across 31 States and Union Territories converged for what has rapidly become the most vibrant fixture on India's sporting calendar.

A Vision of "Viksit Bharat"
In a special message that set the tone for the week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Games as a "trampoline" for unconventional talent.

"Beach and coastal sports demand physical endurance and mental strength under constantly changing conditions," the PM noted. "By bringing emerging disciplines to the forefront, these Games create new pathways for talent to be discovered and nurtured, moving us closer to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047."

The Games were formally inaugurated by the Lt Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha, who highlighted the inclusive nature of the event-pointing out how athletes from landlocked regions like J&K are now excelling in sand-based disciplines like Pencak Silat.

Day 1: Defending Champions and Debutant Shocks

The competitive action lived up to the opening ceremony's grandeur. In Beach Soccer, the defending champions Odisha made a loud statement in the women's Group A, dismantling Maharashtra with a staggering 11-3 victory. However, the story of the day was debutants Himachal Pradesh, who pulled off a stunning come-from-behind 7-5 win against the hosts, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.

In Beach Kabaddi, the powerhouse state of Maharashtra asserted its dominance early. Both their men's and women's units registered comfortable wins, with the women's team thrashing the hosts 71-18. Haryana also looked clinical, with their men's team outclassing Andhra Pradesh 53-16.

The Road to January 10

Under the watchful eyes of the mascot 'Pearl' - the energetic dolphin - the competition will intensify over the next five days. With 32 gold medals up for grabs across six medal sports, the focus remains on identifying the next generation of stars for international beach multisport events.
