Chhattisgarh has scripted a historic moment in Indian sport by hosting the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026, marking a major step in promoting indigenous talent under the Government of India's Khelo India mission.
The Games officially began on March 21, 2026, with competitions taking place across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Surguja, showcasing both sporting excellence and tribal heritage. The inaugural edition features over 2,300 athletes and nearly 3,700 participants, making it one of the largest tribal-focused sporting events held in the country.

With more than 32% of its population belonging to tribal communities, Chhattisgarh serves as a natural host for the Games, where traditional sports culture has long been embedded in daily life.
Nine Sports Disciplines To Highlight Competitive And Indigenous Talent
The Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 includes nine disciplines, consisting of seven competitive sports and two demonstration events aimed at preserving indigenous traditions.
Competitive sports include archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling, with venues spread across the three host cities. Hockey fixtures will take place at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium in Raipur, while athletics events are scheduled at Krida Parisar in Jagdalpur and wrestling competitions at Gandhi Stadium in Surguja.
Alongside these, traditional disciplines such as Mallakhamb and Kabaddi will be featured as demonstration sports, bringing national attention to athletic traditions deeply rooted in tribal communities.
Adding cultural significance to the Games is the official mascot Morveer, designed to reflect tribal pride and unity.
The name combines the words 'Mor', meaning 'mine', or our own, and 'Veer', symbolising bravery. Together, the mascot represents courage, identity, and the collective spirit of tribal athletes participating in the event.
The Games aim to serve as more than just a competition, offering athletes a national platform to showcase talent and gain recognition beyond regional boundaries.
Chhattisgarh has fielded a strong contingent across multiple disciplines, with several athletes expected to make an impact.
In weightlifting, Tikeshwar Dhruv, Lucky Markam, and Suresh Kashyap are among the notable names representing the state. Meanwhile, archers Nishant Patel, Akash Raj, and Abhilash Raj will compete across compound and recurve categories.
Wrestling prospects Raja Dhruv, Arihant Bhoyar, Vandana Komara, and Rameshwari Nag are also expected to challenge for podium finishes, while athletes in football and athletics aim to build momentum for the host state.
The Khelo India Tribal Games represent a significant step toward identifying and nurturing talent from regions that have historically lacked structured training and national exposure.
By combining competitive sport with cultural representation, the inaugural edition aims to create long-term pathways for tribal athletes, ensuring that talent from remote regions receives national recognition and development opportunities.
