The inaugural edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 is set to begin in Chhattisgarh, with leading Indian athletes and Olympians throwing their weight behind the initiative, calling it a major step towards nurturing grassroots talent from tribal communities across the country.

The multi-sport event will feature participation from 30 states and Union Territories, with close to 3,800 athletes competing across nine disciplines. The Games will be hosted across three cities - Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja - and will run until April 3.

A Platform for Untapped Talent

The Khelo India Tribal Games aim to tap into the vast, often underrepresented talent pool from tribal regions. Seven medal sports - including athletics, archery, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling - will be contested, while traditional disciplines such as mallakhamb and kabaddi will feature as demonstration sports.

A total of 106 gold medals will be up for grabs, with athletics offering the highest number (34), followed by swimming (24), wrestling (18), and weightlifting (16).

"A Matter of Pride": Dilip Tirkey

Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, described the Games as a landmark moment for Indian sports.

"It is a matter of great pride that this championship is being started for the first time. It is a great opportunity for tribal youth to showcase their talent and move forward in sports," he said.

Tirkey, himself from a tribal background, emphasised that many athletes from such communities have gone on to become national icons, and this platform could help create many more.

Athletes Welcome Initiative

Animesh Kujur highlighted the importance of reaching underserved regions. "There are many places in India where sports haven't reached. This makes the Khelo India Tribal Games all the more special," he said.

The event also maintains a near 50:50 gender participation ratio, aligning with the broader vision of inclusivity and equal opportunity in sports.

Strong Representation from Key States

Host state Chhattisgarh, along with Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam, will have the largest contingents, each fielding more than 100 athletes. The Games will also see team events like hockey and football being played in Raipur, while athletics will be held in Jagdalpur and wrestling in Sarguja.

A Step Towards a Sporting Nation

The Khelo India Tribal Games are part of the Government of India's larger vision to develop a robust sporting ecosystem and identify talent from the grassroots. With structured trials, coaching support from the Sports Authority of India, and national-level exposure, the initiative aims to transform potential into performance.

As Tirkey summed up, the Games are not just a competition but a pathway for tribal youth to dream bigger and represent India on the global stage.
