It was also another high-quality day at the athletics arena inside the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, where four KIUG meet records were bettered for the second day in a row, taking the total number of records broken in this edition to nine.

The fifth edition of KIUG is being held across seven cities in Rajasthan, with 4448 athletes from 222 universities competing in 23 medal disciplines. The Games are being held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in collaboration with the Rajasthan State Sports Council and hosted by Poornima University.

Chandigarh University rule the waters in Udaipur

At the water sports venue in Udaipur, Chandigarh University stamped their authority in Canoe & Kayaking, narrowly missing out on a clean sweep. They won all but one gold medal across men's and women's events, underlining their depth and preparation.

In the women's events, Salam Chaoba Devi opened the gold rush with victory in C-1 500m, before Chandigarh University took top spot in C-2, K-2 and K-4, while Pooja claimed gold in K-1 500m.

In the men's section, Chandigarh University secured gold in C-2, K-1, K-2 and K-4, with only the C-1 500m title eluding them. That race went to Guru Kashi University's Tongbram Roshan Singh, who denied Chandigarh a clean sweep on the water.

High drama and four records on the track and field

Most of Wednesday's action in Jaipur centred around the athletics stadium, where a series of high-quality performances lit up the evening session.

The race of the day was the men's 4x400m relay, where Mumbai University led for most of the contest before Panjab University's Lokesh Singh Gurjar produced a stunning anchor leg. Gurjar overtook Yash Joshi in the final 100 metres to clinch gold for Panjab University in 3:12.40s, bettering the previous KIUG meet record of 3:13.44 set by Mangalore University. Mumbai University's silver-medal time of 3:12.73s was also inside the old mark.

Earlier, Shintomon CB of Mahatma Gandhi University dominated the men's 110m hurdles final, leading from gun to tape. He clocked 14.32s, improving the previous KIUG record held by Vikas Khodke, who had set 14.40s. Khodke, representing Shivaji University, finished with silver in a photo-finish, as both he and Rahil Sakeer VP (University of Calicut) recorded 14.52s.

In the field events, Guru Kashi University's Sanya Yadav broke the women's Discus Throw meet record with a best effort of 50.73m in her second attempt, eclipsing the previous mark of 50.60m set by Shalini Chaudhary of Barkatullah University.

The women's Triple Jump also saw the top two finishers go past the KIUG meet record. Aleena T Saji of Mahatma Gandhi University leapt to 13.09m, while Arshdeep Kaur of Panjab University recorded 12.80m. Both distances bettered the earlier mark of 12.78m held by Aishwarya B of Mangalore University.

There were other notable performances too:

  • Srireshma S (University of Madras) took gold in women's 100m hurdles.
  • Samriti Jamwal (Himachal Pradesh University) won the women's 200m, while Gokul Pandiyan (SRM University) topped the men's 200m.
  • Lovely Professional University grabbed gold in the women's 4x400m relay, and Simran Singh (GNDU) dominated the men's 10000m.
  • In the field, Sudeep (Kuvempu University) claimed men's High Jump, while Dupinder Singh (Panjab University) won men's Hammer Throw.

Sarabjot, Palak fire in shooting; team sports deliver drama

At the Jagatpura shooting range, Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh teamed up with Palak to win the 10m Air Pistol mixed team gold for Panjab University, edging KLEF University's Mukesh Nelavalli and Dwaram Pranavi 17-15 in a tight final. GNDU secured the bronze.

In the 50m Rifle 3-Position, Sartaj Tiwana of Lovely Professional University shot 459 to take gold, with Surya Pratap Singh Banshtu (Panjab University) and Hitesh S (ANU) completing the podium. LPU also topped the 50m Rifle 3-Position team event.

In women's football, Chaudhary Bansi Lal University, Bhiwani grabbed gold with a 2-0 win over GNDU at Poornima University. Pooja's early goal in the 10th minute and Nancy's strike in the 83rd minute sealed the result. Nancy had also netted the winner in the semi-final against Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, capping a memorable tournament.

In women's hockey, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) clinched their first-ever KIUG gold with a 1-0 win over ITM University, Gwalior, thanks to a 34th-minute goal from Aliva Jate. In the men's hockey final, Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya beat Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith 5-1, while Bengaluru City University took bronze.

In table tennis, there was mixed fortune for Chitkara University in Jodhpur. Their women's team beat Adamas University 3-0 to secure gold, but the men's team squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 2-3 to Chandigarh University, who added another gold to their tally.

Fit India Zone & 'Khelo Rajasthan' initiative add legacy value
