Knicks Defence In Focus As Hart And Brown Hail Stifling Spurs After Season-low

The New York Knicks earned a decisive 114-89 win over the San Antonio Spurs, capping a season-low for Spurs points. A collective defensive effort limited San Antonio to poor three-point shooting, with Hart and Bridges contributing on offence, while Brown emphasised perseverance and a five-man on-court rotation.

The New York Knicks relied on intense defense to beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-89, holding San Antonio to a season-low points total and ending an 11-game winning run. The Spurs entered the matchup after their strongest attacking month, yet New York slowed that momentum and underlined a growing defensive identity in a key regular-season meeting.

Victor Wembanyama still produced 25 points and 13 rebounds, but New York treated that as progress after Wembanyama had punished the Knicks earlier in the season with 42 points and 18 rebounds. Limiting those numbers on this occasion helped New York control the game and keep San Antonio from finding rhythm inside or outside.

Knicks defence hailed after Spurs hold

New York also targeted the Spurs’ perimeter shooting. San Antonio, who averaged 38% from three-point range in February, managed only 26.5% from beyond the arc in this game. That drop in accuracy supported New York’s interior work on Wembanyama and turned a confident Spurs offence into a more predictable unit across four quarters.

Coach Mike Brown felt the performance reflected longer-term improvement, not just one night. Even the games we haven't scored a lot of points, like at Chicago and then Houston, our defense has gotten better, coach Brown said, as quoted by ESPN. We had five guys on a string. That view matched how New York protected the paint and closed rotations.

Knicks players and staff highlighted how that collective approach is becoming central to their identity, with communication and positioning emphasised throughout the win.

Knicks forward Josh Hart stressed that Wembanyama’s display did not change the priorities for New York. Obviously, he's an extremely talented individual, but you know, for us, we have to continue to make strides defensively, Knicks forward Hartsaid. I know offense is good, and we're going to keep getting better, and we have talented guys [on defense]. We have to make sure we bring that and hang our hat on that.

Mikal Bridges supported that mindset while delivering his best scoring night since late January, finishing with 25 points. They're a really good team, and you have to bring your 'A' game, Bridges said. We have a lot of guys who can score so sometimes touches might be limited. But I try to control what I can control, and that's bring energy on both ends.

With Wembanyama contained more effectively, Spurs three-point shooting restricted, and Bridges and Hart reinforcing the defensive message, New York combined structure with energy to halt San Antonio’s 11-game surge. The performance suggested the Knicks’ recent defensive progress in games at Chicago and Houston is beginning to translate into results against in-form opponents.
