The New York Knicks secured a narrow 118-116 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 3, but the ending left many puzzled. Karl-Anthony Towns expressed his disbelief at the officiating, describing it as unprecedented. Towns contributed 31 points, while Jalen Brunson added 30, helping the Knicks take a 2-1 lead in the series.
Despite being fouled with just half a second left on the clock, Brunson's free throw strategy was crucial. He made the first shot to extend New York's lead to two points. Following coach Tom Thibodeau's advice, he deliberately missed the second attempt, knowing Detroit wouldn't have enough time to score after a rebound.

A timekeeper error complicated matters when the clock started prematurely during Brunson's missed free throw. This caused the buzzer to sound before anyone touched the ball. Officials then awarded Detroit possession with half a second remaining, giving them one last opportunity to win.
Jalen Duren's pass towards Cade Cunningham went astray, allowing the Knicks to hold on for victory. Towns expressed his disbelief at this decision: "I ain't going to lie to you; shoutout to the scorer's table, man. Giving your team another chance like that is fire," he joked post-game. "I've never seen that in 10 years of basketball."
Josh Hart from the Knicks suggested that the timekeeper's mistake might have been intentional to benefit Detroit. "That's not a coincidence," Hart remarked. "When it's an inexcusable mistake like that, you should just let [Brunson] go again." He believed they overheard Thibodeau instructing Brunson to miss intentionally.
The Pistons were equally upset with how officials managed certain calls during the game. They argued that a backcourt violation by Brunson went unnoticed with five seconds left on the clock. At that point, Detroit was trailing by three points.
Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff highlighted this oversight as pivotal: "He catches the ball in the frontcourt, recognises that he's getting ready to go into the backcourt, then drops the ball." Bickerstaff expressed his desire for clarification on procedural aspects of such decisions.
The teams are set for another showdown in Game 4 on Sunday, with Detroit hosting once more. Both sides will be eager to address their concerns and adjust strategies as they continue their playoff battle.
