Kochi to host National Sailing Championship

By Staff

Kochi, Dec 7 (UNI) The port city of Kochi will host the 'Ocean Blue' National Ocean Sailing Championship next month.

The race will showcase India's sailors aspiring to ride the waves in future. Prominent among them will be Cdr Dilip Donde of Mumbai Sailing Club, who would be India's first sailor to undertake a solo voyage around the world on a sail boat in the year 2010.

The race is being conducted by Offshore Sailing Association of India OSA(I), the parent organisation under the Yachting Association of India, dedicated to promote and broadbase the sport of ocean yachting in the country.

The race will be flagged off on January 13, 2008 by Vice-Admiral S K Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.

The yachts will sail to the beautiful and serene islands of Lakshadweep where the sailors will be hosted by the Indian Navy.

They will race back across the challenging ocean to arrive at Kochi, the finishing point, on January 23, where the race will end in a gala closing ceremony.

The race is being promoted by Ocean Blue, India's largest leisure boating company specialising in organising sailing events and manufacturing and servicing yachts.
