Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid did not have an impressive start to the season as they drew 1-1 against minnows Alaves.

Defending champions FC Barcelona had a brilliant start to their season as they thrashed Real Betis 6-1 to mark their arrival this season. Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick and Lionel Messi scored a brace.
