The Los Angeles Lakers faced a setback in their NBA Cup game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, losing 101-93. Coach JJ Redick expressed disappointment, noting that his team made critical errors. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was instrumental for the Thunder, scoring 36 points, with 15 in the final quarter. This victory eliminated the Lakers from advancing to the quarter-finals.
Gilgeous-Alexander has consistently performed well, scoring over 30 points in five of the last six games. Jalen Williams contributed 19 points, helping the Thunder secure their fourth consecutive win. For the Lakers, Dalton Knecht led with 20 points, while D'Angelo Russell added 17. However, LeBron James and Anthony Davis managed only 27 points combined.

The Lakers had a chance to close the gap late in the game but faltered due to turnovers. Austin Reaves' pass was intercepted by Williams, extending Oklahoma's lead to 99-93. The Lakers committed 17 turnovers, resulting in 20 points for the Thunder. Redick highlighted these mistakes as pivotal in their defeat.
Despite the loss, Redick acknowledged some positives. "We played well enough and hard enough to win against the best team in the West," he stated. He praised his team's defensive efforts as their most cohesive since the season began. However, he emphasized that numerous plays hindered their success even before crucial moments.
After the match, Redick discussed strategies to enhance Davis' scoring opportunities despite tight Thunder defence. Davis attempted only ten shots but still achieved a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Redick noted that opponents have been focusing on limiting Davis' usual scoring spots.
Davis showcased versatility with seven assists and four blocks despite not scoring at his usual rate. Redick commended his adaptability and willingness to pass under pressure from opposing defences.
Looking ahead, the Lakers (11-8) will embark on a four-game road trip starting Sunday against the Utah Jazz. This journey presents an opportunity for them to regroup and address areas needing improvement following their recent performance challenges.
