Lando Norris States It Is Silly To Dismiss Max Verstappen From Title Contention In Formula One

Lando Norris believes it is unwise to underestimate Max Verstappen in the Formula One title race. Despite McLaren's dominance this season, he acknowledges that Verstappen remains a serious contender.

Lando Norris believes it would be unwise to dismiss Max Verstappen's chances in the Formula One title race, despite McLaren's strong performance this season. Norris is currently second in the drivers' standings, trailing his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by three points. Piastri has secured four victories out of eight races in 2025, contributing to McLaren's 172-point lead in the constructors' championship.

Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, remains a formidable competitor. He is the only non-McLaren driver to win a race this season, triumphing at both the Japanese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix. Despite these successes, Red Bull has faced challenges with their RB21 car, particularly evident in Bahrain and Monaco. However, Norris believes these issues don't rule Verstappen out of contention.

Norris: Don't Count Verstappen Out Yet

Norris emphasised that Verstappen remains a significant rival each weekend. "We're racing Max every weekend," he stated. "He's been on the podium several times. He's won races. I mean, he beat us in Imola, fair and square, because he was quicker." This highlights Verstappen's ongoing threat despite McLaren's dominance.

While acknowledging the competition from Verstappen and his battle with Piastri, Norris maintains that his approach to racing remains unchanged. "It's a great feeling to be in the lead of the championship and to have more points than everyone," he said. However, he insists that this doesn't alter his daily efforts or goals for each race weekend.

Norris arrives in Barcelona with confidence after converting his pole position in Monaco into a second win for 2025. A repeat performance in Spain would mark his twelfth career pole and third consecutive double pole position achievement. He could also become the first driver since Lewis Hamilton to secure consecutive poles in Spain.

Verstappen's Record at Barcelona

Verstappen has consistently excelled at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, achieving more podiums (eight) and victories (four) there than at any other grand prix venue. If he scores at least 11 points on Sunday, it will mark his highest single-race points tally (currently 168), surpassing Austria (178). Despite not securing pole since Miami Grand Prix—his third of the season—Verstappen has often won without starting from pole.

If successful again in Spain without starting from pole position, it will be his 33rd such victory, equalling Alain Prost for third-most all time. This demonstrates Verstappen's ability to overcome starting disadvantages and remain competitive throughout races.

Current Championship Standings

The current drivers' standings see Oscar Piastri leading with 161 points, followed by Lando Norris with 158 points and Max Verstappen with 136 points. In fourth place is George Russell from Mercedes with 99 points while Charles Leclerc from Ferrari holds fifth place with 79 points.

In terms of constructors' standings: McLaren leads comfortably at 319 points; Mercedes follows at second place with147 points; Red Bull closely trails behind them at143points; Ferrari sits fourthwith142points; Williams rounds outthe top fivewith54points.

McLaren stands poised for another successful outing as they aimto extend their impressive runof scoringin46consecutive grands prix—a featthat could surpassFerrari’s record if achievedinSpainthis weekend—further solidifyingtheir dominancein2025season thus far .
