The Utah Jazz have secured forward Lauri Markkanen with a five-year, $238 million contract extension. This deal includes an increase in next season's salary and extends through the 2028-29 season. Markkanen's salary will jump from $18 million to $42 million next season, followed by $196 million over the subsequent four years.
Markkanen expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I'm excited to get this extension done. I'm excited to get back to work and build with this franchise." The 27-year-old Finland native has shown significant growth since being drafted.

Selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2017 NBA Draft, Markkanen was traded to the Chicago Bulls on draft night. He earned First-Team All-Rookie honours in his debut season (2017-18). In August 2021, Chicago traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Markkanen spent one season with Cleveland before being traded to Utah as part of the deal that sent Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland. His first season with the Jazz saw him average a career-high 25.6 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game.
In the 2022-23 season, Markkanen was named an All-Star for the first time and received the NBA's Most Improved Player award. He followed up by averaging 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds last season.
Markkanen's shooting prowess is notable; he ranks third all-time in made three-pointers among players seven feet or taller, with 1,004 made shots. Only Dirk Nowitzki (1,982) and Channing Frye (1,049) have more.
The contract renegotiation includes $220 million in new money, according to his agent Michael Lelchitski of SIG Sports. This substantial financial commitment underscores Utah's confidence in Markkanen's abilities and potential future contributions.
"I'm excited to get back to work and build with this franchise," Markkanen reiterated, highlighting his commitment to Utah Jazz's future success.
Markkanen's journey from being drafted by Minnesota to becoming a key player for Utah illustrates his resilience and growth as an athlete. His performance continues to improve each season, making him a valuable asset for the Jazz.
The extension ensures that Markkanen remains a central figure for Utah Jazz through the 2028-29 campaign, providing stability and continuity for the team.
This contract reflects both Markkanen’s past achievements and future potential within the NBA landscape. His consistent performance makes him a cornerstone for Utah’s ambitions moving forward.
