Law of averages favours us against India: Jayawadene

Port of Spain, Mar 22 (UNI) Having lost eight of the 10 one -dayers recently against India, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene today asserted that the law of averages now favours his side and he was confident of a good show by his side in tomorrow's all-important final Group B league match against 1983 Champions.

''I think we have a good chance because of the law of averages and we have been playing good cricket,'' Jayawardeane told mediapersons at Queen's Park Oval here.

''We want t go into the Super Eight phase with two points in our kitty and for that we have to beat India,'' he said.

''We are taking the match against India very seriously because whoever wins will carry two points. I think we have played good cricket and we deserve to carry those two points.

We will have 100 per cent focus on the game against India,'' Jayawardene added.

With two wins under their belt, Sri Lanka are almost assured of a berth in Super Eight, while India have to beat the Lankans and then hope to pip Bangladesh with a better net run rate for the next stage.

India, if they beat Sri Lanka and make it to the next stage ahead of Bangladesh, will carry two points and Jayawardene is just not prepared to concede those two crucial points to his rivals.

''These two points will be very important in the Super league. It means you have already have one win under your belt as you start your campaign in the next phase.

''We have enjoyed cricket so far but we have a big game tomorrow and we are looking forward to it,'' Jayawardene said.

Star batsman Sanath Jayasuriya also promised a good showing, saying ''we are taking it match by match and now the focus shifts to the match against India''.

''We will give our 100 per cent in the match. Whenever I have played against them in India or any other places, I have done well. We want to play some good cricket against India,'' the ledt-hander said.

''Our focus now is to concentrate on our strength and play good cricket. We hope to get a good start whether we are batting or bowling first. By now we have fairly good idea about the wicket.'' UNI
