Thriston Lawrence expressed that securing victory at the DP World Tour Championship and surpassing Rory McIlroy to win the Race to Dubai title would be immensely significant for him. Lawrence is the sole contender who can stop McIlroy from claiming the Race to Dubai title, previously known as the Order of Merit, and joining Seve Ballesteros with six wins, just two behind Colin Montgomerie's record.
Lawrence needs a win at Jumeirah Golf Estates and hopes McIlroy finishes tied for 11th or lower. Last weekend, McIlroy secured third place at the Abu Dhabi Championship, finishing one shot ahead of Lawrence. Paul Waring won his second DP World Tour title there, his first in six years.

Throughout this season, Lawrence has achieved five runner-up positions, including at The Open and the BMW PGA Championship. He also secured five additional top-10 finishes. Currently trailing McIlroy by 1,785 points with 2,000 points available for the winner in Dubai, Lawrence eagerly anticipates competing against his idol.
"It's nice to have a chance," Lawrence stated during his pre-tournament press conference. "It's going to take a lot, but just incredible to have an opportunity. I'm very grateful just to be inside the top 50 to be able to compete this week."
Lawrence's consistency has been remarkable over recent seasons. He won twice on the DP World Tour during each of his first two seasons and has now entered the world's top 50 rankings. Despite only winning on the Sunshine Tour in 2024, he remains proud of his development as a golfer.
"Finishing in the top 10 ten times this year proves that I'm growing as a golfer," Lawrence added. "I'm getting more comfortable out here. Obviously, ranking-wise, it's the best season I've had in my life."
Reflecting on his journey, Lawrence shared that he won twice during his rookie year and again last year. This year saw him triumph on the Sunshine Tour. "I always feel like with the strength of golfers in today's time, winning on any tour is quite an achievement," he remarked.
Although he hasn't yet won on this tour in 2024, Lawrence remains hopeful about his chances at the upcoming event. "Where I am now, it just feels comfortable," he said. "It feels like I can win every week."
Lawrence's growth over two years has been impressive. He acknowledges how far he's come and looks forward to potentially clinching another victory soon.
