The R&A has revealed that the top LIV Golf League player not yet exempt will secure a spot in this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The highest-ranked player among the top five in the LIV standings, who hasn't already qualified, will be granted entry. This year's 153rd Open is scheduled from 17-20 July at Portrush, marking six years since it last hosted the event.
The USGA recently announced a similar exemption for the US Open, which will occur from 12-15 June at Oakmont Country Club. A leading LIV player will also receive an exemption there. Mark Darbon, CEO of the R&A, stated, "The Open is a global championship for the best men's golfers and each year we review our exemptions to ensure we offer pathways into the championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours."

Darbon further explained that players competing in LIV Golf should have opportunities to qualify for The Open through their individual season standings and existing pathways. He expressed pride in offering diverse qualification opportunities worldwide and anticipation for seeing which golfers will secure their place at Royal Portrush in July.
LIV golfers like Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia have previously received special exemptions. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith are already exempt due to their performances in past major championships.
This initiative highlights efforts to integrate LIV Golf players into prestigious tournaments. By providing these exemptions, both The Open and US Open aim to include top talent from various golf tours. This approach ensures that all deserving players have a chance to compete on these grand stages.
