Leclerc Wins British Grand Prix After Late Antonelli And Verstappen Drama

Charles Leclerc ended a long win drought with victory for Ferrari at the British Grand Prix 2026, winning under a late safety car after Kimi Antonelli’s race collapsed with mechanical problems and penalties, while George Russell and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium following a key strategic call.

The win was Leclerc’s first since the United States Grand Prix in 2024, and it doubled as a landmark for Ferrari. The Italian team registered a 250th grand prix victory, extending the gap over McLaren, who remain second on the all-time list with 203 wins.

Russell’s second place at Silverstone gave the Mercedes driver a major lift in the title race. Russell is now 25 points behind championship leader Antonelli in the drivers’ standings, and this result also marked Russell’s strongest British Grand Prix performance, offering valuable momentum for the second half.

Hamilton’s third place ensured another strong score, yet the strategy call under the safety car cost extra points. Hamilton dropped behind Russell after pitting late, leaving Hamilton third in the drivers’ standings. Even so, Hamilton recorded a 15th career podium at the British Grand Prix, highlighting sustained consistency at the home event.

Ferrari missed out on a one-two finish at Silverstone for the first time since 2002. The team’s choice to pit Hamilton behind the safety car allowed Russell to stay ahead, while Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Isack Hadjar, who secured fifth for Red Bull after a measured drive.

The Racing Bulls pair delivered strongly, with Liam Lawson taking sixth and Arvid Lindblad securing seventh. Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto claimed eighth, while the two Alpines filled the final points places, Franco Colapinto finishing ninth and Pierre Gasly 10th, as the midfield pack capitalised on Antonelli’s late troubles.

British Grand Prix 2026 drama for Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli had appeared on course to make history as the youngest British Grand Prix winner. The Mercedes driver arrived at Silverstone after winning the sprint and securing pole, yet a poor launch allowed Leclerc and Hamilton to surge ahead into the opening corners.

Hamilton soon struggled with tyre graining, giving Antonelli a chance to recover from the slow start. The Italian stayed patient, then overtook Hamilton around Copse on lap 11, just as Hamilton was also dealing with a five-second false-start penalty that needed serving during a pit stop.

That move gave Leclerc around four seconds of breathing space at the front while Hamilton took the penalty in the pits. When Hamilton and Russell rejoined, they exchanged places on track, but Hamilton’s afternoon worsened as a slow puncture, picked up battling Max Verstappen, forced another unscheduled stop.

Antonelli then pitted to cover the threat of an undercut from rivals behind, aiming to protect track position. However, the late phase of the race brought disaster. With 11 laps left, Antonelli reported car problems, dived into the pits again, and later dropped to 16th after track limits penalties.

Verstappen’s late spin brought out the safety car, compressing the field and hinting at a tense finale. Ferrari reacted by calling both Leclerc and Hamilton into the pits, yet Hamilton rejoined behind Russell and could not repass before the chequered flag, as the British Grand Prix finished under safety car conditions.

Leclerc’s victory also halted a run that was close to becoming his longest podium drought since 2023. The Monegasque avoided going six races without a top-three finish, while Ferrari’s milestone win strengthened their position in the constructors’ standings, moving further behind Mercedes but ahead of McLaren.

Leclerc’s controlled drive, Antonelli’s setback, and Russell’s recovery turned the British Grand Prix 2026 into a pivotal weekend. Ferrari achieved a key milestone, Mercedes kept the championship lead with Antonelli and Russell, and Hamilton maintained strong home form despite strategy frustration at Silverstone.
