Kawhi Leonard expressed gratitude to Gregg Popovich after the San Antonio Spurs announced the coach's departure. Popovich, who drafted Leonard in 2011, worked with him for seven seasons. Together, they secured the 2014 NBA Championship, where Leonard earned the Finals MVP title by defeating LeBron James' Miami Heat.
Popovich's coaching career with the Spurs spanned 29 years, marking the longest tenure with a single team in NBA history. His record includes 170 postseason victories, the most by any coach with one franchise. During his time in San Antonio, he coached six Hall of Famers: David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Dominique Wilkins, and Pau Gasol.

Leonard praised Popovich for his dedication to basketball and his influence on Leonard's career. "He had a phenomenal career," Leonard stated. "He coached till pretty much he couldn't, in a sense." Leonard appreciated how Popovich helped him build a strong foundation and taught him how to win.
Despite stepping down from full-time coaching due to health issues after suffering a stroke on November 2, Popovich will remain as the team's president of basketball operations. Leonard hopes this break will aid Popovich's recovery and allow him to focus on his health.
After leaving the Spurs in 2018, Leonard joined the Toronto Raptors before moving to the Los Angeles Clippers. He may aspire to join the ranks of Hall of Fame players coached by Popovich. Meanwhile, Leonard's current season concluded following a loss against the Denver Nuggets in Game 7 of their playoff series.
Reflecting on Popovich's impact on his career and life, Leonard said: "I appreciate everything he's done for me." He also extended well wishes for Popovich's health and future endeavors while acknowledging his remarkable contributions to basketball.
