LG ITC Classic Open to feature top amateur golfers

Gurgaon, Apr 21 (UNI) The LG ITC Classic Open Amateur Golf Championship tees off here today with a star-studded field expected to vie for honours at the Classic Golf Resort.

The event, which forms the opening leg of the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour, will see the likes of number one on the Order of Merit Manav Das along with Abhishek Jha, Simarjeet Singh and Gagan Verma.

Das has been in sublime form this season and on current form looks all set to add another title in his kitty.

He was forced to sit out for nearly a year due to a back injury but came back solidly to win three titles last season.

''I think my marriage has proved lucky,'' Manav said. ''But seriously my game came good at the right moment and although I made a couple of mistakes last year, it was fairly a good season for me.'' The experienced Das will be challenged by the lanky Abhishek Jha who has emerged as one of the leading amateurs of the country.

Amanjyot Singh, a leading player in the junior circuit who first tasted victory in the amateur circuit back home in Jaipur, will be looking to establish himself in the amateur ranks.

The other veterans to look out for will be Gagan Verma, Saurabh Bahuguna and Simarjeet Singh amongst others.

The field also includes the quartet of Jasjeet Singh, Tarun Ghogale, Vikram Rana and HS Kang who have just returned from a sojourn to Pakistan.
